History of Loudon-Melrose

As the city of Roanoke continued to grow, new areas were developed for homes. In the 1890s, a streetcar line was completed, connecting Salem to Melrose. This helped the city expand outwards. By the 1920s, this growth reached the Loudon-Melrose area.

Most of the houses built in this neighborhood during the 1920s and 1930s were a style called the foursquare. These homes typically have two stories and a simple, square shape. They were popular because they offered a lot of space for families.
