Growing Up in New Orleans

Louis Barbarin was born in the lively city of New Orleans on October 24, 1902. Music was a big part of his family. His father, Isidore Barbarin, was a musician. Louis also had brothers named Paul, Lucien, and William, who all grew up to be musicians too. Louis learned how to play the drums from a talented teacher named Louis Cottrell, Sr.. This early training helped him become a great drummer.

His Amazing Music Career

Around 1918, Louis Barbarin joined the first Onward Brass Band. The band was led by Manuel Perez. Louis played drums for many dances with other famous musicians. These included Kid Rena, a trombonist named Jack Carey, and Punch Miller. He also performed on fun excursion boats with Sidney Desvigne.

In 1937, Louis joined Papa Celestin's popular band. He stayed with this band for a long time, even after Papa Celestin passed away. After that, a banjo player named Albert French took over the band. Louis Barbarin continued to be the drummer. He often recorded music with all these different bands, helping to create many classic jazz songs.

Later Years and Legacy

After World War II, Louis Barbarin also showed off his singing talent. He sang in a group called the Four Tones. In the 1950s and 1960s, he worked again with Punch Miller. Louis played in several bands during the mid-to-late 1960s.

In the 1970s, he traveled a lot, performing his music in many places. This included tours in Europe, where he shared New Orleans jazz with people around the world. Louis stopped playing drums in 1982. He passed away in New Orleans on May 12, 1997. He was laid to rest at Mount Olivet Cemetery in New Orleans. Louis Barbarin is remembered as an important part of jazz history.
