Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Louis Carrion (also known as Ludovicus Carrio) was a smart scholar from Flanders (a region in modern-day Belgium). He lived from 1547 to 1595. He was known as a humanist, which means he studied ancient Greek and Roman texts and ideas. He was also a classical scholar, focusing on the languages and writings of ancient times.

One of his most famous achievements was editing a very old poem called the Argonautica. This poem was written by a Roman poet named Gaius Valerius Flaccus. Louis Carrion published his version of the poem around 1565 or 1566. He used a special old handwritten copy (a manuscript) for his work. This manuscript is now called the Codex Carrionis. Sadly, this important old book was lost later on.

Louis Carrion's Important Works

Louis Carrion worked on many other important books and writings. He wrote comments on the works of Sallust, a famous Roman historian, in 1574. He also studied the writings of Tertullian, an early Christian writer.

In 1583, he worked on the writings of Censorinus, who was an astrologer and writer from ancient Rome. Later, in 1585, he helped edit the works of Aulus Gellius, another Roman writer, along with Henry Estienne. Louis Carrion also published letters written by Ogier de Busbecq, a traveler and writer.

Some of his published books include:

  • In Valerii Flacci Setini Balbi Argonauticon libros octo castigationes (published in Antwerp by Plantinus, 1566)
  • Antiquarum lectionum commentarii III. In quibus varia scriptorum veterum loca supplentur, corriguntur et illustrantur (This book helped to complete, correct, and explain different parts of ancient writings.)
