Louis Hémon (born October 12, 1880 – died July 8, 1913) was a French writer. He is most famous for his novel Maria Chapdelaine. This book tells a story about life in rural Quebec, Canada.
About Louis Hémon
Louis Hémon was born in Brest, France. He grew up in Paris with his family. He went to secondary schools like Montaigne and Louis-le-Grand.
After school, Hémon worked as a bilingual secretary for shipping companies. From 1904, he also wrote for a sports newspaper in Paris. He studied law and oriental languages at the Sorbonne. Later, he moved to London, England.
Life in Canada
In 1911, Louis Hémon moved to Canada. He first settled in Montreal. He later worked on a farm in the Lac Saint-Jean area of Quebec. It was during this time that he wrote his famous novel, Maria Chapdelaine.
His Legacy
Sadly, Louis Hémon died young. He was hit by a train in Chapleau, Ontario, on July 8, 1913. He never got to see how popular his novel would become.
After his death, Maria Chapdelaine became very well-known. It has been translated into more than 20 languages. People in 23 different countries have read his book. Other novels he wrote were published after he passed away. A Canadian artist named Rajka Kupesic even created paintings inspired by his work.
Louis Hémon had one daughter, Lydia-Kathleen. She was born in England from his relationship with Lydia O'Kelly.
