Louis de Lorraine was an important French leader in the Catholic Church during the 1500s. He was born on October 21, 1527, in Joinville, France, and passed away on March 29, 1578, in Paris. Louis was the fourth son of Claude, Duke of Guise, and Antoinette de Bourbon. He had famous siblings, including Charles of Guise, who was also a Cardinal, and Mary of Guise, who became the queen of Scotland by marrying King James V. Louis was also the nephew of another Cardinal, Jean de Lorraine. People sometimes called him the Cardinal de Guise.

Louis de Lorraine's Church Career
Louis de Lorraine began his journey in the church at a young age. He became the Bishop of Troyes on May 11, 1545, when he was only 18. Because he was so young, he had to manage the position until he reached the age of 27, which was the official age for such a role.
Important Church Positions Held
Louis moved to another important church position as the Bishop of Albi on June 27, 1550. His career continued to grow.
- On December 22, 1553, Pope Julius III made him a Cardinal. This was a very high honor in the Catholic Church.
- He became the Archbishop of Sens on May 9, 1561. However, he gave up this role in 1562 to Cardinal de Pellevée.
- On October 5, 1568, he was made the Bishop of Metz.
