Louis III, Duke of Bavaria facts for kids
Louis III (born February 9, 1269 – died May 13, 1296) was a duke who ruled Lower Bavaria from 1290 until 1296. He shared this important role with his brothers, Otto III and Stephen I.
Early Life and Family
Louis was born in a city called Landshut. His father was Henry XIII, Duke of Bavaria, and his mother was Elizabeth of Hungary. His grandparents on his mother's side were Béla IV of Hungary and Maria Laskarina.
Becoming a Duke
When Louis's father, Henry, passed away in February 1290, Louis and his two brothers, Otto III and Stephen I, took over the rule of Lower Bavaria together. This meant they all shared the power and responsibility of leading the region.
His Time as Ruler
Louis was known for having a very fancy and expensive court. A "court" was like a big household of nobles and advisors who helped the duke. Because his court cost so much money, taxes had to be increased for the people of Lower Bavaria. Louis was married to a woman named Isabelle, who was the daughter of Frederick III, Duke of Lorraine. However, Louis and Isabelle did not have any children. He died in 1296.
