Louis IX (also known as Louis the Rich) was a very important ruler in the 15th century. He was born on February 23, 1417, and passed away on January 18, 1479. Louis was the Duke of Bavaria-Landshut starting in 1450.
He was the son of Henry XVI the Rich and Margaret of Austria. Louis is famous for starting the University of Ingolstadt, which later moved and is now known as the University of Munich.
Louis's Life and Rule
Louis became the Duke of Bavaria-Landshut in 1450, after his father passed away. He was one of three powerful and wealthy dukes who ruled this area in the 1400s. Their main home was Trausnitz Castle in Landshut, which was a huge and impressive fortress.
In 1458, Louis took control of the independent cities of Dinkelsbühl and Donauwörth. He had some disagreements with Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, but they made peace in 1463. In 1462, Louis won an important battle against Albert III, Margrave of Brandenburg. Albert was trying to expand his power in a region called Franconia.
Louis founded a university in Ingolstadt in 1472. This university later moved to Landshut in 1800 and then to Munich in 1826. Today, it is called the Ludwig-Maximilians-University.
A very famous event Louis organized was the Landshut Wedding in 1475. This was a grand celebration for the marriage of his son, George, to Princess Hedwig Jagiellon. Hedwig was the daughter of King Casimir IV of Poland.
Louis's Family
On March 21, 1452, Louis married Princess Amalia of Saxony. She was born on April 4, 1436, and passed away on October 19, 1501. Amalia was the daughter of Frederick II, Elector of Saxony.
