Louis Trauth Dairy facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Louis Trauth Dairy was a well-known milk and dairy product company. It started in 1920 in Newport, Kentucky, USA. The company was founded by Louis Trauth Sr. It grew from a small 600-square-foot (56 m2) building into a very large facility. This facility eventually covered five city blocks!

Early Days and Growth

When Trauth Dairy first opened, it faced a lot of competition. There were 54 other dairies in the Greater Cincinnati area. But Trauth Dairy worked hard to stand out.

Over the years, the company made many improvements. Since 1985, they added new parts to their facility three times. These big expansions helped them make and deliver dairy products more efficiently.

Innovations in Dairy

Trauth Dairy was known for being innovative. They were one of the first dairies in their area to use a special process called vacuum pasteurization for milk. This process helps to make milk safer and last longer.

They were also the first in Cincinnati to use tamper-evident packaging. This means the packaging showed if someone had tried to open it before you did. They used this for products like sour cream, cottage cheese, and dips. This helped customers feel safer about their food. Trauth Dairy also made a special kind of milk called "Fat Free plus a/B milk."

Changes in Ownership

In 1997, the Trauth family sold the company to a larger business called Suiza Food Corp. Later, in 2001, Suiza Food merged with another big company, Dean Foods. This meant Trauth Dairy became part of the Dean Foods family of brands.

The End of an Era

After 91 years of making dairy products, Louis Trauth Dairy closed its doors in 2011. It had been a long-standing business in the Kentucky area.
