Lourdes Villagomez was born in Mexico City in 1984. She started taking painting classes when she was just 10 years old. Later, she studied graphic design with a focus on fine art at the Iberoamerican University in Mexico City.

She continued her art journey by studying at CATS College Cambridge in the United Kingdom. After that, she earned a master's degree in painting and drawing at the Riaci Academy in Florence, Italy.

Lourdes is a modern artist known for her many paintings and large murals, especially those made with acrylic paints. Her artwork is special because it captures Mexican culture, history, and traditions. Her art has become very popular, partly because she uses technology a lot. She shares and sells her work online, like on her Instagram account, where she shows how she creates her art.

Her Art Career

Villagomez has become a very well-known modern artist in Mexico. In 2016, a group called "Cultura Colectiva Plataform" in Mexico named her the second best new artist from Latin America.

She has also won other awards, like the Design Award from "Canal 11". She also received an award for a huge mural she made for Autism Awareness Day at the Pachuca city hall. This mural is very big, measuring two meters tall and eighteen meters wide!

Lourdes has worked on other cool projects too. She created a mural with the company Comex and Street Art Chilango. This mural, which is 3 by 14 meters, was made to encourage women to check themselves for breast cancer. The idea came about because this disease is a leading cause of death for women over twenty-five in Mexico.

Her most recent work was a wall painting at the Nike Woman Mexico store in Mexico City. She worked on this with another Mexican artist, Paola Delfín. This mural aims to inspire women to live active lives and exercise together.

What Makes Her Art Special?

Villagomez mostly uses acrylic paints in her art. Her style is truly unique, filled with different lines, drawings, geometric shapes, and bright colors.

She once explained that her style doesn't fit into any single art movement. But she describes it as a bit like pop art because of the colors, a bit like cubism because of the shapes, and very Mexican because of the themes she chooses.

According to the Estilo DF journal, her art shows Mexican culture and beliefs in many ways. Villagomez loves to highlight the folklore, traditions, and even how death is seen in Mexico. One of the main Mexican symbols she uses in her art are Catrinas. These are female skeleton figures that represent the unique way death is viewed and celebrated in Mexico. The goal of her art is to share what Mexican culture is all about with people all over the world.

One of her most personal and famous works was a series of paintings called El Cuerpo del Iceberg (The Body of the Iceberg). This was her second art show in Mexico, as most of her shows have been in other countries, especially Italy. In each painting of El Cuerpo del Iceberg, she showed one of her dreams. She started this project by writing down her dreams every day for five months. Then, she picked twelve of them to turn into paintings. She used animals in these twelve paintings. Each painting could be turned and placed in any of four different ways. Villagomez explained, "In the exhibition, I placed my works in a way that people couldn't understand them, because that is the way dreams work. Sometimes you need to turn them and turn them to get them."
