Early Days and the Post Office
Loving once had its own post office. It opened a long time ago, on December 2, 1908. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office helped the people living in Loving get their letters and packages. However, it didn't stay open forever. The post office closed on June 15, 1922.
Who Were John and Amanda Loving?
The community of Loving got its name from a special couple: John and Amanda Loving. They were members of the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw are a Native American tribe. John Loving was very important to his community. He could speak both English and the Choctaw language. The Choctaw language is part of the Muskogean language family. Because he spoke both languages, John worked as a translator. This meant he helped people who spoke different languages understand each other. Naming the community after them was a way to honor their family and their contributions.
