What Does Lualualei Mean?

The name Lualualei has a special meaning. Hawaiian language expert Mary Kawena Pukui studied its origins. She thought it might mean "beloved one spared." However, she believed it more likely means "flexible wreath." This name gives us a clue about the area's history.

Where is Lualualei?

Lualualei is a coastal valley. This means it is near the ocean. The town of Māʻili is located here. It sits on the "makai" side of the valley. "Makai" is a Hawaiian word. It means "towards the ocean" or "seaward." So, Māʻili is on the western side of the valley.

Important Government Facilities

Lualualei Valley is home to several important government sites. These include communication stations. One is the USN VLF Lualualei. This is a very low frequency (VLF) radio transmitter. It sends signals to submarines. Another is the USCG Communication Station Honolulu. This station helps the U.S. Coast Guard. The Naval Magazine Lualualei is also in the valley. This facility stores important naval materials.
