Early Life and Music Journey
Lucille Spann was born Mahalia Lucille Jenkins in Bolton, Mississippi. She was the ninth child in her family. Her mother passed away when Lucille was very young. Her father and sisters then raised her.
Lucille began her singing journey with gospel music. Gospel music is a type of Christian music. Even though she was not allowed to listen to blues music, she grew to love it. She especially liked famous blues singers like Bessie Smith and T-Bone Walker.
When she was a teenager, Lucille moved to Chicago. There, she met Otis Spann, who was also a talented musician. They started making music together and later got married in 1969.
Singing with Other Blues Stars
Lucille became a recording artist with Spivey Records. This was a record company that released blues music. She recorded alongside many famous blues musicians. These included her husband Otis Spann, Muddy Waters, Luther Johnson, and Sammy Lawhorn.
After Otis Spann passed away in 1970, Lucille continued her singing career. She made new recordings with Mighty Joe Young. She also performed at a special festival in 1972. This festival was held to honor Otis Spann. Many other blues legends performed there, like Freddie King and Otis Rush.
Lucille's Recordings
Lucille Spann released several of her own songs. In 1972, she put out two singles. A single usually has two songs, one on each side. Her songs were "Womans Lib" and "What You Do To Your Woman." She also released "Country Girl Returns."
In 1974, Lucille released her own album. An album is a collection of songs. Her album was called Cry Before I Go.
Lucille Spann passed away in August 1994 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She was 56 years old.
