Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus (consul 148 BC) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus was an important Roman leader who lived in the 2nd century BC. He was a statesman, which means he was a skilled and respected public official.

In 148 BC, Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus was elected to a very high position called consul. A consul was one of the two most powerful leaders in the Roman Republic, similar to a president today. He served alongside another consul named Spurius Postumius Albinus Magnus.

His last name, Caesoninus, tells us something interesting about his family. It suggests he was originally from the Caesonia gens (a Roman family group) and was later adopted into the Piso family. Adoption was common in ancient Rome, often to continue a family name or inheritance.

Early Career and Public Service

Serving as Praetor in Hispania

Before becoming a consul, Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus held another important role. In 154 BC, he served as a Praetor. A praetor was a high-ranking Roman official who often acted as a judge or a military commander.

During his time as praetor, he was given charge of a Roman territory called Hispania Ulterior. This was a province, or a region controlled by Rome, located in what is now modern-day Spain.

Challenges in the Lusitanian War

Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus was involved in the Lusitanian War while in Hispania. This was a conflict between the Romans and the Lusitani, a group of people living in the region.

Unfortunately, Lucius faced a defeat in battle against the Lusitani, who were led by a commander named Punicus.

Consulship and the Third Punic War

Leading During a Major Conflict

Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus became consul during the second year of the Third Punic War. This was a very important war between Rome and its old rival, Carthage.

His role in this war was not very successful. He was seen as not being active enough in his command. Because of this, he was replaced the following year by a more effective general, Scipio.
