Lucius Manlius Acidinus (praetor 210 BC) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lucius Manlius Acidinus was an important Roman leader who lived a long time ago, in the late 200s BC. He was part of a powerful Roman family called the Manlia family. During his time, he held several important jobs in the Roman Republic, helping to lead the city and its armies.

A Roman Leader in Action

Lucius Manlius Acidinus held a special job called praetor urbanus in 210 BC. This was like being a main judge or city manager in Rome. The Roman Senate, which was like the government council, sent him to Sicily. His mission was to bring back a consul, Marcus Valerius Laevinus, to Rome so new leaders could be chosen in elections.

Facing Hasdrubal

A few years later, in 207 BC, Lucius Manlius Acidinus was with Roman troops near a town called Narnia. They were there to stop a famous enemy general named Hasdrubal. Acidinus was the first person to send news back to Rome that Hasdrubal had been defeated. This was a very important victory for Rome!

Campaigns in Hispania

In 206 BC, Lucius Manlius Acidinus and another leader, Lucius Cornelius Lentulus, were given control of the Roman province of Hispania (which is modern-day Spain). They had special powers, like a general, to govern and lead armies there.

The next year, he led his troops to victory against two groups, the Ausetani and Ilergetes. These groups had rebelled against Rome because a famous Roman general, Scipio, had left the area. Acidinus helped bring peace and Roman control back to the region.

Return to Rome

Lucius Manlius Acidinus stayed in Hispania for several years, working hard for Rome. He didn't return to Rome until 199 BC. The Roman Senate wanted to give him a special parade called an ovation to celebrate his successes. However, a public official called a tribune, Publius Porcius Laeca, stopped him from entering the city for this celebration.
