Early Life and Family

Lucy Earle was born in Rochester, New York in 1851. Her family was very active in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Lucy stayed involved with this church her whole life. In 1878, she married James Alfred Sprague. They had one son who lived.

Working for Change

Lucy Sprague was a dedicated volunteer in her church. She held several important roles. She was the treasurer, managing the church's money. She also worked as the superintendent for the Sunday School for young children.

Both Lucy and her husband were members of the Susan B. Anthony Club for Colored Women. This group worked to help women get the right to vote. Lucy also worked closely with another activist, Hester C. Jeffrey. They worked together in the church and on important social causes.

Later Life

Lucy J. Sprague passed away on September 29, 1903. She died at her home in Rochester. She was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.
