Early Life and Education

Lucy Skaer was born in Cambridge, England. She went to the Glasgow School of Art. There, she studied Fine Art, which is about making different kinds of art.

About Lucy Skaer's Art

Lucy Skaer's art often explores how ideas and materials connect. She likes to make copies of old objects. She then changes them or puts them in new places. This gives them new meanings. Her art often looks at history, nature, and old buildings. For example, her 2008 artwork, The Siege, explored these themes.

Many of Lucy Skaer's artworks also interact with public spaces. In one project, she removed a paving stone in Glasgow. Then, a special guest helped lay a new one. In Amsterdam, she once left a diamond and a scorpion on a pavement. She also secretly placed moth and butterfly cocoons in courtrooms. She hoped they would hatch during trials.

In 2003, Lucy Skaer was chosen for the Beck's Futures art prize. In 2008, the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland, held a show of her art. This show included new works she had created. A book about her art was also published.

In April 2009, Lucy Skaer was nominated for the famous Turner Prize. She was chosen for two artworks. One was Black Alphabet. This piece had 26 thin sculptures made of coal dust. They looked like a famous sculpture called Bird in Space. Her other artwork was Leviathan Edge. This was an art setup that included a real sperm whale skull. It also had drawings and other sculptures. Lucy Skaer did not win the Turner Prize that year. Another artist from Glasgow, Richard Wright, won instead.

Lucy Skaer has also made several films with British artist Rosalind Nashashibi. One film, Flash in the Metropolitan, was made in 2006. It shows artworks in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The museum lights are dim, and flashes of light appear. They have also worked together on films like Our Magnolia and Pygmalion Event.
