Early Life and Schooling
Thane was born in north London. She first went to the University of East Anglia to study history. Later, she earned a master's degree in film from the Northern Media School in Sheffield.
Career in Filmmaking
From 1994 to 1998, Thane lived in San Francisco in the United States. There, she worked at Artists' Television Access, helping to choose and edit video art. She also taught at the Academy of Art College. In 1998, she moved back to London.

It Changed My Life
In 1993, Thane made the film It Changed My Life: Bikini Kill in the UK. For this documentary, she followed the American band Bikini Kill on their tour across the United Kingdom. Bikini Kill was a key part of the riot grrrl movement, which featured female-led punk bands that sang about social issues.
The film also features other important bands from that time, including the Raincoats, Skinned Teen, and Sister George. The movie first showed in 1993 at The Kitchen, an art space in New York City. All of Thane's original video footage is now kept safe at the Fales Library at New York University. Some of her footage was also used in the 2013 documentary The Punk Singer.
She's Real (...)
Thane's 1997 film, She's Real (...), is a documentary about the punk rock and zine culture of the 1990s. A zine is a self-published magazine, often made with a photocopier. This film has been shown at many film festivals and is studied in some university courses.
