Ludeca of Mercia facts for kids
Ludeca was an important leader in a kingdom called Mercia a long, long time ago, around the year 827. He was a nobleman, which means he came from a powerful family. He became the King of Mercia after the previous king, Beornwulf, died in a big battle. Ludeca ruled for only about a year before he also died in a fight.
King of Mercia
Ludeca first appears in history as a trusted advisor to King Beornwulf. In 824, he was called a Latin: dux, which is a Latin word for a leader or duke. Not much else is known about Ludeca before he became king.
Mercia was a powerful kingdom in what is now England. But by the time Ludeca became king, Mercia had lost a lot of its land and power. A strong king named Egbert from Wessex had defeated Beornwulf. Egbert now controlled many parts of southern England, like Essex and Kent.
The people of East Anglia, another region, were tired of being ruled by Mercia. They started a revolt, which means they fought for their freedom. This revolt led to King Beornwulf's death.
Ludeca became king in 826, but his kingdom was much smaller. It included only Mercia itself, plus a few smaller areas like Lindsey and Middle Anglia.
A few months after becoming king, Ludeca led his army against the East Anglians. He wanted to bring them back under Mercian rule. However, Ludeca was killed during this battle. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a very old historical record, says that Ludeca and five of his main leaders were killed in 827. After his death, a new king named Wiglaf took over the kingdom of Mercia.
