Ludvig Vilhelm August Douglas (born November 24, 1849 – died July 20, 1916) was an important Swedish politician and government official. He was a count and came from a very old and famous family called Douglas. His ancestor was Field Marshal Robert Douglas, a brave military leader.

Ludvig Douglas was born in Zürich, Switzerland. His father was Count Carl Israel Douglas. His mother was Countess Louise von Gondelsheim and Langenstein. Through his mother, Ludvig was a distant cousin of Victoria of Baden, who later became the wife of King Gustaf V of Sweden.

Ludvig's Family and Castles

Ludvig inherited land and a castle called Langenstein. He also got back his family's old castle in Sweden, Stjernorp, around 1875. This castle had been lost by his family after a fire in 1789. Later, he became the main leader of the Douglas family when his older brother, who had no children, passed away.

Ludvig married Countess Anna Louise Ehrensvärd. Her father, Albert Ehrensvärd the Elder, and her brother, Albert Ehrensvärd the Younger, were also Swedish Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

Ludvig's Political Career

Ludvig Douglas was a conservative politician. He believed in protecting Swedish industries and favored strong ties with Germany.

Minister of Foreign Affairs

From 1895 to 1899, Ludvig served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden. This meant he was in charge of Sweden's relationships with other countries.

He resigned from this job because of a disagreement about the flag of Norway. At that time, Norway was in a union with Sweden. Ludvig did not want Norway to have its own flag without the special symbol of the union on it. He strongly opposed the idea of a "pure flag" for Norway.

Other Important Roles

Ludvig held several other important positions. He was the Riksmarskalk (Marshal of the Realm) from 1911 to 1916. This was a very high position in the royal court.

He also served as a Landshövding (governor) in two different counties:

As a governor, he worked to help farmers in the Norrland region. He supported them against large forest companies. He wanted laws to protect the wood market for the farmers.

Later Life and Legacy

Count Ludvig Douglas passed away in Lysekil, Sweden. He was buried in the Douglas family graveyard at Vreta monastic church.

Ludvig's sons and grandsons helped the Douglas family grow even larger. They created several new branches of the family in both Sweden and Germany. For example, one branch lives at Stjärnorp Castle today.
