Gaspare Antonio Pietro "Luigi" Gatti (born January 3, 1875 – died April 15, 1912) was an Italian businessman. He was known for managing fancy restaurants. His most famous job was running the À la Carte restaurant on the RMS Titanic. This restaurant offered special meals for passengers who wanted an even more exclusive dining experience than the ship's regular first-class service.

Who Was Luigi Gatti?

Luigi Gatti was born in a town called Montalto Pavese, Italy. He grew up to become a successful entrepreneur in the restaurant business. This means he owned and managed restaurants. He was very good at creating high-quality dining experiences for his customers.

Gatti's Restaurant Career

Before joining the Titanic, Gatti had already made a name for himself. He managed several popular restaurants in London, England. These places were known for their excellent food and service. His experience made him the perfect choice to run the special restaurant on the new, grand Titanic ship.

The À la Carte Restaurant on the Titanic

The RMS Titanic was a huge, luxurious ocean liner. It was designed to be the best ship in the world. Besides the main dining rooms, the Titanic had a special restaurant called the À la Carte restaurant. This was an extra option for passengers.

Dining on the Titanic

The À la Carte restaurant was not included in the ticket price. Passengers had to pay extra to eat there. It offered a menu where you could pick individual dishes, just like in a fancy restaurant on land. It was a very exclusive place, popular with the wealthiest passengers. Luigi Gatti was in charge of making sure everything ran perfectly.

The Titanic Disaster

On April 10, 1912, the Titanic began its first trip from Southampton, England, to New York City. Luigi Gatti was on board, managing his restaurant. The ship was carrying over 2,200 passengers and crew.

Gatti's Final Moments

In the late hours of April 14, 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg. The ship began to sink. Luigi Gatti was one of the many people who did not survive the disaster. He died on April 15, 1912, at the age of 37.

After the Sinking

After the Titanic sank, ships were sent to search for survivors and recover bodies. Luigi Gatti's body was found by a ship called the CS Minia. This happened between April 26 and May 6, 1912.

Burial in Canada

Luigi Gatti was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Many victims of the Titanic disaster were laid to rest there. His grave is a reminder of the many lives lost when the "unsinkable" ship went down.
