Luis García Meza Tejada (born August 8, 1929 – died April 29, 2018) was a military leader in Bolivia. He became president of Bolivia in 1980 after taking control from the previous leader. He was in charge for about a year before he had to leave office.

Luis García Meza Tejada was born in La Paz, Bolivia. He joined the Bolivian Army and became a general. Before he became president, he worked closely with another Bolivian president, Hugo Banzer. This experience helped him gain power and influence within the country's military.
How He Became President
In 1980, Luis García Meza led a military takeover. This is called a coup d'état. During a coup, the military takes control of the government by force. He removed President Lidia Gueiler from power. After the takeover, he declared himself the new president of Bolivia on July 17, 1980.
His Time as Leader
Luis García Meza was president of Bolivia for a little over a year. His time in office lasted from July 1980 to August 1981. During this period, there were many concerns about how people were treated in Bolivia. Because of these concerns, he was forced to leave the country. This is known as being exiled.
Later Life and Death
After leaving office, Luis García Meza lived outside Bolivia for some time. He later returned to Bolivia. He passed away in La Paz on April 29, 2018. He was 88 years old when he died from a heart attack.
