About Luis Gordillo

Early Life and Education

Luis Gordillo was born in 1934 in Seville, a city in Spain. He was the second of eight children in his family. When he was older, he first studied law at university. However, he soon realized his true passion was art. He then decided to switch his studies and went to the School of Fine Arts in Seville to learn more about painting.

Moving to Paris

After finishing his art studies, Luis Gordillo made a big decision in 1958. He moved to Paris, France. At that time, Spain was ruled by a government that controlled what artists could create. This was called a dictatorship, and art was often censored, meaning it was not allowed to be shown if the government didn't like it. Moving to Paris allowed Gordillo to explore his art freely, without these restrictions.

His Artistic Journey

During the 1960s, Luis Gordillo went through a challenging time with his art. He mostly drew simple shapes and forms. But in 1970, he found new inspiration. His paintings became full of bright and exciting colors.

As the 1980s arrived, his style changed again. His art became less colorful and more abstract. Abstract art means that the paintings don't show things exactly as they look in real life. Instead, they use shapes, colors, and lines to express ideas or feelings.

In 2017, Luis Gordillo also wrote an art book. It was called Little Memories.
