Luis Ortiz González facts for kids
Luis Ortiz González (born in Madrid, Spain, in 1932 – died on February 2, 2006) was a Spanish politician. He served as a Minister of Public Works in the Spanish government under Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez. He played a role in Spain's return to democracy after many years.
Early Life and Career
Luis Ortiz González first studied law at university. After finishing his studies, he became a technical inspector for the government. Later, he worked as a financial director for RENFE, which is Spain's national railway company.
In December 1975, he started his political career in the government. He was named Under-Secretary for Commerce. This means he helped manage trade and business for the country. In 1976, he became Under-Secretary for Public Works, helping to oversee big building projects.
Becoming a Minister
In 1977, Luis Ortiz González wanted to become a member of the Spanish Parliament. This was for the 1977 General Election, which was the first democratic election in Spain in over 40 years. However, the Prime Minister, Adolfo Suarez, asked him to withdraw his name. Instead, Suarez appointed him as the Minister for Public Works on April 15, 1977. He took over from Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo.
A few months later, in July 1977, there was a "reshuffle" in the government. This means some ministers were changed, and Luis Ortiz González was replaced.
Political Parties and Parliament
On June 14, 1978, Luis Ortiz González was chosen to be the President of the Union of the Democratic Centre (Spain) (UCD) party for the Madrid region. He resigned from this role in 1979 because he didn't get a chance to run in the 1979 General Election.
When Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo became Prime Minister, Luis Ortiz González was appointed Minister of Public Works and Urbanism again. This happened on February 27, 1981, and he served until December 2, 1982.
He finally became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the October 1982 General Election. He was elected as part of the UCD party, representing the Zamora Province.
When the UCD party broke up in February 1983, he joined a new party called the Democratic and Social Centre (CDS). He became the main speaker for the CDS group in Parliament.
Later, he left the CDS and joined the Democratic Popular Party (PDP). He was re-elected in the 1986 General Election. This time, he was part of an alliance called the Popular Coalition, which included the PDP, the Liberal Party, and the Popular Alliance (AP).
In 1989, these three parties joined together to form the People's Party, which is still a major party today. That same year, Luis Ortiz González moved to the Spanish Senate, which is another part of the Spanish Parliament. He served one term there.
He returned to the lower house of Parliament, the Spanish Congress, in the 1993 General Election. He was re-elected two more times, in 1996 and 2000, still representing Zamora.
