After finishing his studies, he worked as a researcher at Brown University in the United States. In 1977, he returned to the Complutense University of Madrid to become a professor.

Luis Vázquez Martínez has received special recognition for his work. In 1995, the Shanghai University of Science and Technology in China gave him an honorary doctorate. This is a special award given to people who have achieved great things.
