Luis de Milà y de Borja came from a very important family. His parents were Juan de Milà and Catalina de Borja. His mother, Catalina, was the daughter of Juan Domingo de Borja y Doncel. This family connection was very significant because his uncle, Pope Callixtus III, was the leader of the Catholic Church.

Becoming a Cardinal

Because of his family ties, especially to Pope Callixtus III, Luis de Milà y de Borja was chosen to become a cardinal on September 17, 1456. A cardinal is a high-ranking official in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope. Cardinals often advise the Pope and can even help choose the next Pope.

His Role as a Bishop

Besides being a cardinal, Luis de Milà y de Borja also served as a bishop in different areas. From 1453 to 1459, he was the administrator and bishop of Segorbe. Later, from 1461 to 1509, he served as the bishop of Lérida. Bishops are responsible for leading a specific region of the church, called a diocese, and looking after the spiritual needs of the people there. He held these important positions for many years, showing his dedication to the church.
