The Lyman Woodard Company Workers' Housing is an old building in Owosso, Michigan, located at 601 Clinton Street. It used to be a home for many families. This building is important because it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's a special historical site. It was added to this list in 1980.
A Home for Workers
In the 1880s, a man named Lyman Woodard moved his furniture and casket company to Owosso. He built a very large factory nearby. His company grew, and he needed more skilled workers.
At that time, it was hard to find homes for new employees in Owosso. To attract and keep good workers, Woodard decided to build this special housing unit. It was right next to his factory. New employees could live there until they found their own homes.
We don't know the exact year the housing was built. However, it looks very similar to the factory building, which was built in 1885. This suggests they were built around the same time.
Over the years, the building stopped being used for homes. Today, it is a business space. The H.K. Allen Paper Company is located there now.
What Does It Look Like?
The Lyman Woodard Company Workers' Housing is a two-story building. It is made of red brick. The building has a balanced look with its windows. It originally contained six separate living units.
The windows are simple, with one pane of glass over another. They are set into gently curved arch openings. Brick pillars, called pilasters, separate every three window sections. These pillars help divide the building into its original units. A simple decorative brick line runs along the very top of the building.
