Early Life of Mário Cesariny
Mário Cesariny was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He was the youngest child and only son of Viriato de Vasconcelos and María de las Mercedes Cesariny. His mother was from Spain, with French and Italian family roots.
Mário Cesariny's Education and Art
Mário Cesariny studied at the well-known Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio. He also learned music from the composer Fernando Lopes Graça. Later, he went to the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. There, in 1947, he met André Breton, a key figure in the surrealist movement.
Cesariny was greatly inspired by French surrealism. He became one of its biggest supporters in Portugal. He helped start the Lisbon Surrealist Movement with other Portuguese artists. These artists included Alexandre O'Neill and José-Augusto França. During this time, he also met João Artur da Silva.
After discovering surrealism, Cesariny moved away from the neorealist art style. Neorealism was popular in Portugal then, especially among artists who resisted the government of Oliveira Salazar. Cesariny chose to always try new things in his art. This idea of constant experimenting became the most important part of his work throughout his career.
From 1960 until the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, Cesariny faced difficulties from the Portuguese police. He was often questioned because of his lifestyle. This situation sometimes led him to stay in Great Britain and France during the 1960s and 1970s. He later spoke openly about these experiences.
