Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Médée is a famous French opera with three parts, called acts. An opera is like a play where most of the words are sung. The music for Médée was written by Luigi Cherubini. The story, called the libretto, was created by François-Benoît Hoffmann. It's based on an old Greek story by Euripides and a play by Pierre Corneille, both about a character named Medea.

The opera was first shown in Paris on March 13, 1797. Later, an Italian version was performed in Milan in 1909. Many people think Médée is Cherubini's best work. It became popular again in 1953 because of a famous singer named Maria Callas.
