Mónica Echeverría Yáñez (born September 2, 1920 – died January 3, 2020) was a Chilean journalist, writer, actress, and literature teacher. She was a strong woman who believed in equal rights for everyone. Mónica also called herself a "rebel" because she often disagreed with the government's economic plans.

Mónica Echeverría's Early Life
Mónica Echeverría grew up in a well-known family. Her parents were José Rafael Echeverría Larraín and the writer María Flora Yáñez. Her grandfather was a politician named Eliodoro Yáñez Ponce de León.
When she was a young child, Mónica lived in France until she was eight years old. She was there with her grandfather, who had to leave Chile because of a tough government led by General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo. When Mónica came back to Chile, she had forgotten how to speak Spanish!
School and Becoming a Teacher
Mónica went to a school run by nuns, which she later described as very old-fashioned. After that, she studied at the Pedagogical Institute of the Universidad de Chile. She then became a Spanish teacher for many years.
She spent over two decades teaching literature. Even with her teaching job, she found time to follow her passion for theater. She worked as an actress, director, and even wrote plays.
After a military takeover in Chile in 1973, Mónica and her husband moved to England. There, she continued teaching literature and grammar. They returned to Chile in 1978. Later, she was in charge of the Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho, a cultural center.
In 2016, Mónica Echeverría wrote a book called ¡Háganme Callar!. In this book, she shared memories of her childhood. She also wrote about people who changed their minds about their revolutionary ideas from the 1960s.
Mónica's Family Life
In 1944, Mónica married Fernando Castillo Velasco, who was an architect and politician. They had five children together: Carmen, Cristián, Fernando José, Javier, and Consuelo. Sadly, Javier died in a car accident in the early 1970s.
Mónica Echeverría's Public Work
In 1973, Mónica and her husband were invited to teach at the University of Cambridge in England. While they were there, their children, Cristián and Carmen, were secretly fighting against the government of Augusto Pinochet in Chile. Mónica and Fernando returned to Chile in 1978.
Theater Work
During her time at the university, Mónica became very interested in theater. She directed plays for children and even wrote some herself. In 1955, she helped start a theater group called Teatro ICTUS. She was especially known for directing children's plays. Some of her most popular works were the series Quiquirico, El círculo encantado, Chumingo y el pirata de lata, Guatapique, and Zambacanuta.
Becoming a Writer
Mónica Echeverría published her first book, Antihistoria de un luchador, in 1993. It took her eight years to finish this long book, which was a biography of a union leader named Clotario Blest. After this, she wrote many other books, mostly novels based on real people like the famous singer Violeta Parra or General Pinochet.
