María Flora Yáñez Bianchi (born September 1898, died April 7, 1982) was a famous writer from Chile. She wrote many novels and short stories. Her amazing work earned her important awards, like the Atenea Award in 1947 and the Santiago Municipal Literature Award in 1952.

About María Flora Yáñez

María Flora Yáñez came from a family of important people. Her father was Eliodoro Yáñez, a well-known Chilean politician. He also started a newspaper called La Nación.

María Flora's children also became writers. Her son was Alfonso Echevarría (1922–1969). Her daughter was Mónica Echeverría (1920-2020).

Her Writing Style

María Flora Yáñez's writing was part of a trend among women writers of her time. They often wrote about their own lives and feelings. Other famous writers like Marta Brunet, María Luisa Bombal, and María Carolina Geel [es] also wrote in this style.

Some of her books, like Espejo sin imagen (1936) and Juan Estrella (1954), felt like personal stories. They were written as if the main character was telling their own tale.

One of her early books, El abrazo de la tierra (1933), talked about marriage in a new way. At that time, marriage was often seen as a very traditional and serious part of society. But María Flora's book suggested that it could also be "mortal boredom." This idea was quite bold for the early 1900s in Chile.

María Flora Yáñez also wrote for several popular magazines and newspapers. These included El Mercurio, El Diario Ilustrado [es], and Atenea.
