María Luisa Bombal Anthes (Spanish pronunciation: [maˈɾi.a ˈlwisa βomˈβal]) was a famous Chilean writer. She was born in Viña del Mar, Chile, on June 8, 1910. Her stories and novels often explored themes of dreams, feelings, and women's experiences. She was known for her unique writing style.

Life and Education

María Luisa Bombal was born in 1910. Her parents were Martín Bombal Videla and Blanca Anthes Precht.

When she was a child, Bombal went to a Catholic girls' school in Santiago, Chile. After her father passed away in 1919, María Luisa moved to Paris, France, with her mother and sisters. There, she finished her high school studies.

Bombal then went to the University of Paris to study literature and philosophy. She also attended other schools like Lycée La Bruyère and the Sorbonne. It was during this time in Paris that she started to write. After finishing her university studies, she returned to Chile in 1931 to be with her family.

María Luisa also took lessons in violin and drama.

Writing Career

In 1938, María Luisa Bombal published her novel La amortajada. This book was very successful. It won the Santiago Municipal Literature Award in 1941. This was a big honor for her writing.

Later, while she was living in the United States, she wrote a novel in English. This book was called The House of Mist. It was a new version of her earlier Spanish novel, La última niebla. The House of Mist was later translated back into Spanish.

Personal Life

After returning to South America from Paris in 1931, María Luisa had an important relationship with Eulogio Sánchez Errázuriz. He was a pioneer in civil aviation.

In 1933, she moved to Argentina. In Buenos Aires, she met other famous writers like Jorge Luis Borges and Pablo Neruda. These connections were important for her literary journey.

Later, María Luisa moved to the United States. There, she married a French count named Raphäel de Saint-Phalle y Chabannes. They had a daughter together, named Brigitte.

She returned to South America in 1971. She lived in Argentina for a while, where Pablo Neruda helped her. She met many important writers there. After that, she moved back to Viña del Mar, Chile. In 1976, she met Jorge Luis Borges again.

Later Years and Death

María Luisa Bombal spent her final years living in Chile. She passed away on May 6, 1980, in Santiago. She was 69 years old.
