The MV Derbyshire Story
A Giant Ship
The Derbyshire was a very large ship, known as an OBO carrier. This meant it could carry different types of cargo, like heavy iron ore, liquid oil, or other loose materials. It was launched in 1975, meaning it was put into the water for the first time that year. The ship then started its work, or "went into service," in 1976.
The Final Voyage
Sadly, the Derbyshire was lost at sea on September 9, 1980. It sank during a very strong storm called Typhoon Orchid. All 42 people on board, including the crew and two of their wives, were lost during the sinking.
