Discovering Mañagaha Island
Mañagaha is a tiny island, often called an islet, which means it's smaller than a regular island. It sits inside a calm lagoon, protected from the open ocean. This makes its beaches very safe and inviting for swimming and playing.
Nature on the Island
Mañagaha is home to a special bird called the Wedge-tailed Shearwater. These seabirds have a colony here, meaning many of them live and raise their young on the island. They build their nests in burrows, which are like small tunnels in the ground. You can mostly find their nesting areas on the east side of the island.
Mañagaha's Rich History
This small island has a very important history for several reasons. It is the burial place of a famous leader named Chief Aghurubw. He was a chief of the Carolinian people. It is believed that Chief Aghurubw started the first Carolinian settlement on Saipan way back in 1815.
A statue of Chief Aghurubw stands on the island to remember his great achievements. He led his people from their home island of Satawal to Saipan after a terrible typhoon. The island also holds old structures and defenses built by the Japanese during World War II. Because of its important past, the entire island is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. This means it's a special place protected for its historical value.
