Maʻilikākahi facts for kids
Maʻilikūkahi (pronounced Mah-ee-lee-koo-KAH-hee) was an important leader, known as a High Chief, on the island of Oahu in ancient Hawaii. People remember him from old Hawaiian stories and chants as one of the first and most helpful rulers of Oʻahu. He started a special family line, sometimes called the House of Maʻilikūkahi, which became very important on the island.
Who Was Maʻilikūkahi?
Maʻilikūkahi lived a long time ago, likely during the 1400s or 1500s. He was born right there on Oʻahu. His father was a respected leader named Kukahiaililani. Maʻilikūkahi was also related to another important leader, High Chiefess Maelo of Kona.
Leading Oʻahu

Maʻilikūkahi became the leader of Oʻahu after his relative, Haka. When he took charge, he made a big change. He divided the land into many smaller areas called ahupuaʻa. These divisions helped manage resources and make sure everyone had what they needed.
Maʻilikūkahi was a strong leader, but he also faced challenges. He had several rivals who wanted power. Despite this, he managed to rule Oʻahu effectively. His son, Kālonaiki, later became the next Chief of Oʻahu, continuing the family's leadership.
