Mabel Wotton was born in London, England. Her parents were Frances Emily and John Stirling Wilmot Wotton. Her father worked for the government. Mabel had an older brother, Thomas, who wrote plays. Her younger sister, Edith, worked for a book publisher.

In 1895, Mabel met a famous writer named Israel Zangwill. This happened through an actress, Irene Vanbrugh. Zangwill liked Mabel's writing. He helped her get her book, Day-Books, published. It was published by John Lane. Mabel and Zangwill stayed friends for many years. They wrote letters to each other. Zangwill even based a character in one of his books on Mabel.

Mabel knew many important people in London's writing world. She knew writers like George Egerton and Dion Boucicault. She dedicated her story collection Day-Books to Alice Meynell. Mabel never got married.

Mabel Wotton is most famous for her "New Woman" stories. These stories often featured strong, independent women. Besides her adult books, Mabel wrote several books for younger readers. She also wrote non-fiction articles for the Cornhill Magazine. She even wrote a special piece about the actor H. B. Irving.

Mabel Wotton passed away in London on March 3, 1927.
