The MacArthur Memorial is a special place in Norfolk, Virginia. It is a museum and research center. It tells the story of General Douglas MacArthur. He was a very important American military leader. The memorial has three buildings in MacArthur Square.
General MacArthur never lived in Norfolk. But his mother, Mary Pinkney "Pinky" Hardy MacArthur, grew up there. Because of his mother's connection, he chose Norfolk as his final resting place. The city of Norfolk built this memorial in the 1960s. They still own and run it today. This was part of a promise between MacArthur and the mayor, W. Fred Duckworth. MacArthur agreed to give all his papers and medals to Norfolk. In return, he and his wife would be buried at the memorial. The mayor offered the old City Hall building for this purpose.
