The Story of the MacArthur Pine
A Giant Among Trees
The MacArthur Pine was a real giant! Its trunk was huge, measuring about 17 feet 8 inches (5.38 m) around. Imagine trying to hug a tree that big – it would take several friends holding hands! The tree also stood incredibly tall, reaching about 148 feet (45 m) into the sky. That's as tall as a 15-story building! This massive tree weighed around 27 tons, which is like weighing 13 cars.
Even though it was so big, part of its trunk was hollow inside, about 35 feet (11 m) of it. This is quite common for very old, large trees.
Why Was It Famous?
From 1948 to 1971, the MacArthur Pine held a special title: it was the "National Champion" Eastern White Pine. This meant it was recognized as the largest and most impressive tree of its kind in the United States. It was a true natural wonder!
The tree got its name in 1945 from a newspaper in Milwaukee. They decided to name it after a very famous American general, Douglas MacArthur. It was a way to honor him and celebrate this magnificent tree at the same time.
The Tree's Challenges
Even giant trees face challenges. In 1977, about 40 feet (12 m) of the MacArthur Pine's top broke off, likely due to strong winds or a storm. Then, in 1986, it was struck by lightning, which can be very damaging to trees.
Sadly, the MacArthur Pine's long life came to an end on June 23, 2001. It was cut down by a fire that people believed was started on purpose. Even though the tree is gone, its story reminds us of the incredible power and beauty of nature.
