Their lands stretched from east of places like Three Rivers and Old Peak Hill. They also lived near Lakes King and Nabberu. To the south, their territory reached around Cunyu. They were located to the north-northeast of another Aboriginal group, the Wajarri people.

The Madoitja people were known by several other names. These names were sometimes used by other groups or by early European explorers. Some of these names include:

  • Waula: This name was given to them by the Pini people. It means "northerners," because the Madoitja lived to the north of the Pini.
