C. Maeve Lewis McCarthy was born in a city called Galway in Ireland. She loved math and science from a young age. She went to NUI Galway where she earned two degrees: a bachelor's and a master's in mathematical physics. This field combines math with the study of how the universe works.
Later, she moved to the United States to continue her studies. She attended Rice University and earned another master's degree. In 1997, she completed her Ph.D., which is the highest university degree. Her special research project was about designing the tallest possible column without it falling over.
Career Journey
After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. McCarthy worked at the University of South Florida for a year. Then, in 1998, she joined the faculty at Murray State University.
From 2008 to 2011, she took on an important role as the executive director of the Association for Women in Mathematics. This organization helps and supports women who work in mathematics. After this, she returned to Murray State University to teach full-time.
