Synopsis: Marigold's World
Marigold Lesley is a young girl with a big imagination. Her father passed away before she was born. She lives at a family home called Cloud of Spruce with her relatives.
Her family includes her kind mother and two grandmothers. There is also her Uncle Klon, who used to be a sailor. Her Aunt Marigold is a doctor who saved her life as a baby. Because of this, Marigold was named after her aunt.
Life at Cloud of Spruce
Marigold's family makes her life nice, but sometimes a bit quiet. Still, she has many adventures and faces some challenges. These often come from the unique home she lives in.
For much of her childhood, Marigold plays with her imaginary friend, Sylvia. She doesn't ignore other children, but she doesn't make many close friends.
Marigold's Adventures
The book shares many of Marigold's experiences. These include her feelings about her father's first wife, Clementine. She also meets a real Russian princess!
Marigold tries hard to be a "good" girl. She experiences her first crush and even has a surprising success with cooking.
Growing Up and Friendship
As Marigold gets older, she stays very close to Sylvia. Her family starts to worry about this. But then a boy nicknamed Budge moves in next door.
Marigold learns to enjoy real friendships with others. She also learns how to share her friends. She starts to realize that playing with Sylvia isn't as fun as real life. When Sylvia stops appearing, Marigold feels sad. But she knows it's time to move forward.
