Mahendravarman I facts for kids
Mahendravarman I was a powerful king of the Pallava dynasty. He ruled a large part of what is now Tamil Nadu in India from 600 to 630 CE. His father was Simhavishnu, who had brought the Pallava kingdom back to power after defeating the Kalabhras.
During Mahendravarman's time, Tamil literature became very popular. Famous works like the Tevaram, written by Appar and Sambandhar, were created then. King Mahendravarman I was also a writer himself! He wrote plays, including one called Mattavilasa Prahasana and another called Bhagavadajjuka. His son, Narasimhavarman I, became king after him in 630 CE.
Wars and Challenges
During Mahendravarman's rule, the Chalukya king Pulakeshin II attacked the Pallava kingdom. The Pallavas fought many battles in the northern Vengi area. King Mahendravarman was able to protect his main capital city. However, he did lose some of his northern lands to Pulakeshin II.
Amazing Buildings and Temples
Mahendravarman I was also known for his love of building. Many beautiful rock-cut temples were made during his time. Some famous examples include the temples at Mahabalipuram. The Kokarneswarar Temple in Pudukottai is another example. Besides temples dedicated to the god Siva, Mahendravarman also had several cave temples built for the god Vishnu.
