Mahinda V was a king who ruled the Anuradhapura Kingdom in Sri Lanka. He was king during the late 900s and early 1000s. Mahinda V was the very last king of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. He was also the last ruler from the Lambakanna II royal family.

Mahinda V's Rule
Mahinda V became king in 982. His time as ruler was quite difficult. Historical records, like the ancient book Mahavamsa, say that his rule was not strong.
Challenges as King
During his reign, King Mahinda V faced many problems. He found it hard to keep control over all of Sri Lanka. His army also refused to follow his orders. This made the country weak and vulnerable.
The Chola Invasion
In 993, a powerful group called the Chola invaded Sri Lanka. The Chola were from southern India. Their army was led by Rajaraja Chola I.
Fall of Anuradhapura
The Chola army attacked and captured the capital city, Anuradhapura. This was a major event in Sri Lankan history. King Mahinda V had to leave his kingdom.
Flight and Capture
After the invasion, Mahinda V fled to Ruhuna. This was a southern part of Sri Lanka that was harder to reach. However, he was later captured by the Chola forces. They took him to India as a prisoner.
End of a Kingdom
Mahinda V died in India in 1029 while still a prisoner. His death marked the end of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. This kingdom had lasted for over 1,400 years. After Mahinda V, the Chola ruled the northern parts of Sri Lanka for a while.
