Maikanti Kachalla Baru (born July 7, 1959 – died May 29, 2020) was an important Nigerian engineer. He was known for his work in the oil industry. He served as the 18th Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which is Nigeria's official oil company. He held this big role from July 2016 to July 2019. Before that, he was also a top manager at National Petroleum Investment Management Services. Mr. Baru was a respected member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

Maikanti Baru's Early Life and Schooling
Maikanti Baru was born in July 1959 in a place called Misau, in Bauchi State, Nigeria. For his high school education, he went to Federal Government College in Jos and finished there in 1978. He then went to Ahmadu Bello University, where he earned his first engineering degree in 1982. Later, he continued his studies at the University of Sussex, where he got a special degree in Computer Aided Engineering.
Maikanti Baru's Career Journey
After finishing his studies, Maikanti Baru worked at the Jos Steel Rolling Company for three years, starting in 1988. In 1991, he joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) as an Engineering Manager. He held many different important jobs within the NNPC.
For example, from 1997 to 1999, he was the General Manager of the Gas Development Division. Briefly in 1999, he was also an Executive Director for operations at the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC). From 1999 to 2004, he worked as the Chief Technical Negotiator for the West African Gas Pipeline project. He also served as a General Manager for National Petroleum Investment Management Services and for Liquefied Natural Gas.
On July 4, 2016, Maikanti Baru was chosen to be the 18th Group Managing Director of NNPC. He retired from this role on July 7, 2019, when he turned 60 years old. Mele Kyari took over his position. Maikanti Baru passed away on May 29, 2020.
