The Maine Supply Company Building is an old and important building in Lewiston, Maine. It was built in 1911 and looks like a fancy Renaissance-style building. This building is special because it was designed by famous architects, Miller & Mayo. It was also home to the very first car service center in Maine! The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 because of its history.
About the Building
The Maine Supply Company Building is on Lisbon Street. This is a main street in Lewiston where many businesses are located. It is a tall building with four stories. It is made of brick with wooden details.
What it Looks Like
The front of the building is split into three parts. It has cool brick pillars that look like they have corners. These pillars have fancy tops. On the third floor, there is a huge round arch. Inside the arch and on the second floor, you can see many windows grouped together. The first floor has big glass windows for shops. The middle of the first floor has a glass entrance. The other windows are single windows in square openings. Some windows on the third floor have special keystone designs above them. The very top of the building has a fancy roof edge. It has large brackets and small block shapes called dentil molding.
Its Story
The Maine Supply Company Building was finished in 1911. It was first built for the Maine Supply Company. This company sold tools and equipment for farms.
From 1919 to 1928, something new happened here. The building became a place to sell cars. It also had a service center where cars could be fixed. There used to be a small building next to it for garage service bays. That part is not there anymore. Two sections on the ground floor once had big doors. These doors allowed cars to drive right inside. After being a car center, the building was used as a warehouse. It also held offices.
