Makhaira facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The makhaira was a type of ancient Greek weapon. It was usually a large knife or sword with only one sharp side, designed mainly for cutting.

What is a Makhaira?

The Greek word for this weapon is mákhaira. It comes from an older word meaning "battle" or "to fight."

In ancient times, the word makhaira could mean almost any knife or sword. It was even used for a surgeon's tool! But when people talked about fighting, it usually meant a sword with one sharp edge. This type of sword was made for chopping, not for stabbing.

Later, the word makhaira became machaera in Latin. This also meant "a sword." There was even a Roman gladiator called a dimachaerus, who fought with two swords. Today, in modern Greek, the word for "knife" is maxaíri.

Some experts today tell the difference between a makhaira and a kopis. A kopis has a blade that curves forward, while a makhaira usually has a straighter blade.

Makhairai came in many different sizes and shapes. They were used in many places, not just in Greece. Ancient Greek art shows that both Greek and Persian armies used swords with a single sharp edge.

These swords started appearing more often in Greek art around 510 BC. The makhaira shown in these artworks had one sharp side. The blade got wider and heavier towards the tip. This design helped the sword deliver very strong cuts. The shape of the blade meant it could even cut through bone!

Even though we see many makhairai in old drawings, we don't find many real ones from ancient times. This makes them quite rare.

How Makhairai Were Used

A famous Greek writer named Xenophon said that most Greek soldiers used a sword called a xiphos. But he thought the makhaira was better for soldiers on horseback. He wrote that "from the height of a horse's back the cut of a machaira will serve you better than the thrust of a xiphos." This means that chopping with a makhaira was more effective from a horse than stabbing with a xiphos.

This idea makes sense, as cavalry (soldiers on horses) often used cutting swords throughout history. Ancient art and Xenophon's writings suggest that the makhaira used by cavalry was wider than modern swords. It was more like a large chopping knife or a small sword.
