Makini Howell's Journey
Growing Up Vegan
Makini Howell grew up in a vegan family. Her parents owned vegan sandwich shops back in the 1990s. Makini learned a lot about cooking and running a business by helping out in her family's shops.
From Designer to Chef
Before becoming a chef, Makini worked as a graphic designer and clothing designer in New York City. She even designed clothes for famous brands! But she soon realized her true passion was cooking. So, she moved back to the Northwest to follow her dream of becoming a chef.
Opening Plum Bistro and More
Makini opened her first restaurant, Plum Bistro, in 2009. It quickly became a popular spot for delicious vegan food. In 2013, she even wrote a cookbook called Plum.
Makini has done some really cool things! In 2014, she appeared on the Queen Latifah Show. The next year, in 2015, the legendary musician Stevie Wonder hired her as his personal chef! She cooked for him during his huge, year-long music tour.
Besides Plum Bistro, Makini runs other fun food businesses. She has a catering company and a food truck called Plum Burgers. This food truck, which started in 2013, was actually the first vegan burger food truck in the whole United States! She also has a casual eatery called Plum Pantry and a dessert shop named Sugar Plum.
