Amalia "Malí" Guzmán, born on June 27, 1961, is a talented writer from Uruguay. She writes plays, works as a journalist, and creates wonderful books for children.

About Malí Guzmán

Malí Guzmán was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. She studied to be an actress at the El Galpón Theater school. She also learned how to design sets for plays and TV shows at the EMAD school. From 1990 to 1994, she learned from the artist Enrique Badaró.

Plays for Kids

Malí Guzmán has written many plays especially for children. In 2001, her play Cuentos de brujas disparatadas (Crazy Witches' Tales) was nominated for a Florencio Award. This award is for the best children's show. The play used ideas from stories by Valerie Thomas, Arcadio Lobato, and Mercè Company.

She also turned the book Aventuras y desventuras de Casiperro del Hambre by Graciela Montes into a play called Casiperro. Malí Guzmán also helped write a play for adults called Buenas noches, Afrodita.

Malí Guzmán as a Journalist

As a journalist, Malí Guzmán focuses on children's literature. She has written for many newspapers and magazines. These include El País Cultural, Quehacer educativo, and ¿Te cuento?.

She also worked on radio and TV shows. In 1996, she had a weekly segment about children's books on CX 22 radio. In 1999, she worked on children's programs for TV Ciudad [es].

From 1995 to 2000, she was the editor for the children's literature section in El Estante magazine. In 2006, she created a TV show called La Banda for Televisión Nacional Uruguay. This show was a news program for kids aged 6 to 11. She won a Tabaré Award for it, which is a prize for the best children's TV show. The next year, she advised the channel on programs for children and teens.

Working with Education

Malí Guzmán was the head of the advisory council for the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). Since 2008, she has helped the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) with their National Reading Plan. Since 2010, she has helped organize the National System of Public Libraries.

Awards and Recognition

Malí Guzmán has won many awards for her writing:

  • In 1992, her book ¿Cómo se llama este libro? won first prize in a children's literature contest. This contest was organized by Amauta and the MEC.
  • In 1996, she won a prize for a TV fiction show for adults called Molinos de viento. She wrote this with Raquel Costa.
  • In 2001, her book Un lugar para mí (cuentos de amor, oído y garganta) won the Second National Literature Prize. This was in the children's books category.

In 2003, Malí Guzmán won second prize for her book Adivinanzas en la escuela (y otros chimentos escolares). She wrote this book with the illustrator Sergio López Suárez [es]. Her book El robo was a finalist for a Latin American children's literature prize. This book was later published as El robo de mi cumpleaños.

In 2008, she won first and second prizes in the MEC's Annual Literature Award. She won for her books Agustín caminador and Cosas raras. In 2010, she won for her published book Cayó la noche. In 2012, she won again for her unpublished book Caleidoscopio (rimas y canciones). In 2015, her book Agustín Caminador won second prize at the MEC's Annual Literature Awards.

She also helped create the "Caza-curiosos" children's book series for Alfaguara publishing. Malí Guzmán has led workshops about children's books and reading projects. She has also been a judge in many competitions, including some for children's films.
