Malayan tailless leaf-nosed bat facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Malayan tailless leaf-nosed bat (Coelops robinsoni) is a tiny bat found in Southeast Asia. It belongs to a group of bats called Hipposideridae, also known as "Old World leaf-nosed bats." This bat is very small and has soft, long fur. Its fur is usually brown or blackish on its back and grayish underneath. You can tell it apart from other similar bats because it's so small and, as its name suggests, it doesn't have a tail! Sadly, this bat is considered vulnerable, meaning it's at risk of disappearing.

Where This Bat Lives

The Malayan tailless leaf-nosed bat lives only in parts of Southeast Asia. You can find it in Peninsular Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and Borneo. It might also live in the Philippines.

Finding Them in Sarawak

In a part of Malaysia called Sarawak, this bat has only been seen in the eastern areas. These places include Bintulu, Niah National Park, and Gunung Mulu National Park.

Bat Behavior and Habitat

These bats often live in small groups called colonies. They like to make their homes in caves. Sometimes, they also roost in hollow parts of large trees.

Sharing Their Homes

In Peninsular Malaysia, these bats have been seen sharing their roosting spots. They sometimes live alongside another type of bat called Hipposideros ridleyi.

Why They Are Hard to Study

Scientists don't know much about where these bats prefer to live or how they behave. This is mainly because they are very hard to catch! They might be good at avoiding traps and nets. This could be because of how they fly or their very sensitive echolocation. Echolocation is like a natural sonar system bats use to find their way around and hunt.
