Malcolm Loughead (born 1886, died 1958) was a clever American engineer who loved airplanes. He helped start a company called the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company with his brother, Allan Loughead. This company later grew into the famous Lockheed Corporation, which makes many different kinds of aircraft and other cool technology!

Malcolm Loughead was born to Flora and John Loughead. He had a half-brother named Victor, a sister named Hope, and his brother Allan Lockheed, who was also a big name in aviation.

Malcolm's Big Invention: Hydraulic Brakes

Malcolm wasn't just about airplanes! In 1917, he also invented and got a patent for the very first hydraulic brakes. These special brakes use liquid pressure to help vehicles stop smoothly and safely. They were so good that a fancy car company called Duesenberg started using them on their 1921 Model A cars. This was a huge step forward for car safety!
