Early Life and Education

Malcolm Stevens went to Bolton School in Lancashire. After school, he studied at the University of Nottingham. He earned two degrees there. One was a Bachelor of Science (BSc), and the other was a PhD. A PhD is a very high university degree.

In 1961, he married Valerie Deans. Their wedding was in Bolton.

Career in Science

In 1972, Professor Stevens started working at Aston University. He became a Reader in Pharmaceutical Sciences. This means he was a senior researcher and teacher. Later, he became a full Professor.

From 1980 to 2006, he was part of a special group. This group was called the Cancer Research UK Experimental Cancer Chemotherapy group. They worked on finding new ways to fight cancer. In 1992, he moved to the University of Nottingham.

Developing Cancer Medicine

Professor Stevens and his team made a very important medicine. It is called Temozolomide. As of 2019, this medicine is the only one approved by the FDA. The FDA is the Food and Drug Administration. They make sure medicines are safe and work well.

Temozolomide treats a serious brain tumor. This tumor is called Glioblastoma multiforme. It is a very dangerous type of cancer.

Impact of Temozolomide

Temozolomide has made a big difference for patients. Before this medicine, only a few people with Glioblastoma lived for five years. Now, with radiation and temozolomide, more people survive.

The medicine has helped more patients live longer. Thanks to Professor Stevens and his group, long-term survival is now possible.

Awards and Honors

Professor Stevens has received important awards for his work.

In 1999, he was given the OBE. This award is for people who have done great things for the country. He received it for his work on cancer medicines. He was called "Professor of Experimental Cancer Chemotherapy" at the University of Nottingham.

In 2009, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very high honor for scientists. It means he is recognized as one of the best scientists in the United Kingdom.
